Welcome to the Readers Cup for 2012

What is it?

Teams of four students together read a set of books, and then compete with other school or public library teams to answer quiz questions from the books.

Why do it?

Readers Cup competitions challenge students to read widely, work collaboratively in a team and continue developing a love of reading.  It allows readers to compete at a regional and state level similar to sporting competitions and to meet other students with an equal passion for books.

When does it take place?

Term 1
Schools and public libraries may run their own Readers Cup competitions in Term 1 to assist in the selection of a team; however, schools must not use their Regional Cup titles for school competitions. Teams need to register by the end of March.

Term 2
Regional competitions are held near the end of Term 2. Regional coordinators will tell teams when to begin reading.  This is usually just prior to or just after the Easter vacation, depending on the date of the regional finals.

Term 3
Winning teams from each region will compete at the state finals to be held on Tuesday 4th September for Year 6/7 and Wednesday 5th September for Year 8/9 during Brisbane Writers Festival, 2012.

Who can take part?

There are two categories: Year 6/7 and Year 8/9.   Most regions will accept only one team per school or public library per category. Check the Regional Information on the website for details of your region or email your regional coordinator. A team of up to 4 readers (plus one optional reserve) may be registered per school/public library. Teams choosing to have more than one reserve cannot be catered for at the regional and state finals. What does it cost?

$30 to register a team.  An invoice will be emailed when you register online. This is an automatic function so if you do not receive an invoice, contact the Readers Cup State Finals coordinator.  Special offer!!  To celebrate National Year of Reading, any school or public library that is a corporate member of CBCA Qld Branch can enter a team for free in 2012. 

If a school needs to enter more than one team, because their region allows that or there is more than one campus, you are expected to pay for the registration of that team. The income from the team registration supports the costs of running the Reader’s Cup competition. Your support is vital so please  ensure that you claim membership exemption for one team only.

You will be asked for your CBCA Qld Corporate membership number when you register, so have your number handy when registering. It will have three letters beginning with C followed by three numbers. You will find it on your invoice. Make sure you pay your CBCA membership before your register. Membership forms can be downloaded from the website at  http://qld.cbca.org.au/qldmembership.htm

Can the team be coached?

Teams should not be coached. The aim is for students to work together to decide who reads what titles and to make up their own questions to test each other. Sample questions and some guidance may be necessary if teams are not familiar with the style of questioning.

How do I get started?

Check Regional Information to find out what books your region will read this year. Check your school and local library to find copies. Place an order for the missing books allowing at least three weeks for delivery. If the book is a long one, you may need a few copies so that all have access.
